Many times I have been asked why I dedicated myself to Ayurvedic Medicine.
Who is Dr. Sebastiano Lisciani?
"I graduated in Medicine and Surgery in 1986 at the University of Bologna. Afterwards, I practiced at a natural medicine clinic for two years.
In 1989 I had my first contacts with Ayurvedic medicine, and in 1990 I went to India for the first time, for an initial study period of three and a half months. I continued to go there every year until 1996, for periods of two to three months each year."
How many years have you been practicing and where?
"I have been practicing since 1992, all over Italy: Bologna, Cava dei Tirreni, S. Maria Capua Vetere, Caserta, Rome, Milan, Palermo, Cefalù, Acireale, Grosseto, Cecina, Livorno, Brescia, Rimini, Lugo, Galliera Veneta…".
Dr. Lisciani, what exactly is Ayurvedic medicine?
"Ayurvedic medicine, or more simply, Ayurveda, is the ancient medicine of India. Its name means 'Science of long life'."
Is it an alternative medicine?
"No. Alternative medicines are born and develop in contexts where there is a traditional pharmacological medicine. If they don't work, there is always the chemical drug or the hospital. Ayurveda, on the contrary, has been and still is, for a large part of the Indian population, the only accessible medicine. Obviously, it really had to strive to provide effective answers to diseases."
What is used for treatment?
"Apart from diet (the aim is to reduce foods that are not good for the patient, without making them 'Indian', meaning they can continue to eat Italian-style), herbal and mineral remedies are used in the form of tablets, for ease of administration.
Does the patient have to stop any ongoing allopathic drug therapies?
"Absolutely not. The two therapies can coexist. Only if the attending physician believes that the patient no longer needs some medicine he prescribed, as it is now unnecessary due to any improvements, can he decide to change the dosage or stop its administration. I believe that only the person who prescribed a given therapy has the right to modify it."
What diseases are treated with Ayurveda?
"Practically all of them. Without working miracles, of course. As I said before, it was the only medicine available for millennia in India. In these 16 years of practice I have treated hepatitis, acne, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, ulcers, gastritis, gastroesophageal reflux, headaches, cervical pain, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, alopecia, fertility disorders in both men and women, uterine fibroids, vision loss, capillary fragility and varicose veins, overweight, water retention and cellulite, osteoporosis, glaucoma, colitis, ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, memory and concentration problems, anxiety and depression, insomnia, prostate disorders, cardiocirculatory problems, constipation, diabetes, acute and chronic bronchitis, asthma, pollen and dust mite allergies ........ Maybe I'm forgetting some... "(Smiles).
How long does a therapy last?
"It depends: for an acute bronchitis a week may be enough, if the patient has asthma that has lasted twenty years, it may take several months, if it is old rheumatoid arthritis even years. In the meantime, the patient still experiences significant improvements. It also depends on how much the patient is willing to change their lifestyle, for example by reducing or quitting smoking and correcting their diet, if it is wrong."
What are the causes of disease according to Ayurveda?
"Wrong diet, first of all. Then, lifestyle, smoking in first place, but also frequenting polluted or very noisy places. Also, lack of peace at home and at work."
Last question: are the treatments very expensive?
"It depends on how many different diseases are present. Anyway, I would say no. In any case, it's a matter of priorities: years ago I met two of my patients at one of my conferences, who greeted me and said they were sorry they couldn't continue the therapy, despite the excellent results, because of the cost. Well, the cigarettes they both smoked, considering the brand, cost them more per month than the Ayurvedic therapy......"
